Introduction

Downwind is the practice of sailing along currents and winds, using a wakeboard, canoe, Hawaiian pirogue, sea kayak, wave-ski or prone. Downwind sailing has a long history and has recently been modernized with the use of foils and wings.

Swell is present in all oceans, and can be exploited to sail further from shore and explore places that offer a different view from the coast. It’s a way of exploring places and generating sensations that are hard to find in other activities. It offers unlimited possibilities and an above-average level of satisfaction.

Downwind pioneers

Kai Lenny was one of the first to explore downwind foiling, starting to row far from the coast. His work has won the admiration of many, and opened up new possibilities for harnessing the natural energy of the swell.

Bruno André is also renowned for his work in this field. He was a forerunner in foiling surf spots, and paved the way for swell exploration.

DOWNWIND SAILING

The first foiling downwind experiments took place in 2017, and the practice has evolved since then. The wing has enabled many riders to take up downwind sailing, and it has also enabled wing riders to take up sup foiling.

Getting started is one of the most difficult aspects of downwind foiling. You need to develop a high rowing speed to get going and take advantage of the water. Once started, however, the fun is boundless. Practitioners can get away from the world and explore places that offer a different, adventurous view.

THE ADVANTAGES OF DOWNWIND

Downwind offers many advantages over other water sports. You’re unencumbered by other riders and can cover as much distance as you like. Downwind also offers an unlimited source of pleasure, as you are free to sail in the wild without being tied to specific spots. Finally, the sense of adventure and freedom is accentuated by the remoteness of the coastline.

THE IMPACT OF WING

The wing’s impact on the downwind was significant. It has made the sport accessible to beginners, and allows wing riders to take up sup foiling.
