Which wingfoil package to choose?
You want to discover wing foiling, a very popular board sport, but with such a wide choice of equipment, it’s hard to know where to start: what size wing to choose? Which board length? Which foil? Which AFS foil is right for me?
Our brand has designed several types of foils to adapt perfectly to each level and practice. They are divided into three categories:
1. Getting started
The Flyer range is ideal for beginners to wingfoil flying: with a choice of two front wing surfaces (1500/1800), these foils have been designed to be easy and safe to handle. They’re designed to be easy and safe to handle, allowing riders to make their first flights with ease, at the most affordable price on the market. It’s up to you to choose the size that’s right for you!
2. To progress
The Evo foil takes over from the Flyer with a slimmer, more playful profile, while remaining accessible. It’s an evolutionary foil that allows you to progress by reducing the surface area of the kite (950/1250/1450/1650) to gain in glide and performance. This foil is also ideal for discovering downwind and surf foiling.
3. For intermediate and advanced wing levels
For advanced riders, AFS offers the Pure and Enduro ranges (also suitable for intermediate riders, depending on the discipline, especially speed and free-fly).
Pure (700 / 900): an ultra-versatile foil used in competition on the GWA for freestyle, slalom and waves. Also ideal for foil surfing and freestyle.
Enduro (700/ 900 / 1100 / 1300): with a high aspect ratio, this is a super-handy foil. Fluid glide even at low speeds, optimal lift, it offers comfort and intuitive control worthy of a humpback. Also ideal for downwind and dockstart.
4. For wave enthusiasts
For experienced waveriders, the Silk foil is just perfect for surfing swells and waves. For surf foiling, wing foiling and SUP foiling. Available in 650, 850 and 1050 cm² for the front wing.
5. For downwind
Glide sensations guaranteed with our Pure HA foil model, available in 800 and 1100 cm² sizes. High performance for downwind stand-up paddling as well as wing flying, thanks to its very high ration aspect for long-lasting flight.
Whatever your riding style, there’s an AFS foil for you! Wings with thick profiles, like our Flyer range, will automatically have more lift than wings with thinner profiles, like our Evo range. So, for the same surface area, front wings will not have the same lift from one brand to another.
What about foil mast size?
For foiling beginners, masts between 70 cm and 80 cm are recommended for use on flat water. These masts are also suitable for experienced riders on shallow spots. Once you’ve mastered the flying stages, you can move on to longer masts.
The 80/85 cm masts offer greater comfort and manoeuvrability in flight, making manoeuvring easier.
As for 95 cm masts (or even longer), they increase the angle of attack. They are recommended for experienced wingfoilers and race enthusiasts, offering increased speed and greater precision.
Which wing is right for me?
Which AFS quality model?
D-LITE: ease of use and accessibility. It’s a versatile, lightweight wing, renowned on the market for its ease of use. Top for all levels.
DIAMOND: performance and responsiveness. Perfect for intermediate to expert riders, it is one of the top 5 best-selling products thanks to its excellent balance of power and handling.
DIAMOND V2: this is the wing for you if you’re looking for high performance! Designed with more technical materials, it offers maximum power, lightness, acceleration, maneuverability and versatility, ideal for all conditions. Choose between rigid or boom handles.
DIAMOND UL: For ultra-light winds, from 10 knots.
What size wing?
It’s important to choose the right size wing(s) to progress effectively.
For optimum progress, we recommend a 5 m² kite for riders weighing between 70 kg and 90 kg. This versatile size allows you to ride in a wide range of wind conditions, offering sufficient power for planning from 14-15 knots, and up to 20-25 knots. And it’s easy to handle, thanks to its well-balanced wingspan.
Above 90 kg, opt for a 6 m² for more power.
Under 70 kg, a 4 m² will be perfectly suitable in conditions of 15 to 25 knots.
Up to 3 m² under 50 kg.
We advise beginners against choosing wings that are too large, as too much wing surface area complicates take-off and manoeuvres.
A single wing isn’t always enough: if you want to sail from 15 to 40 knots, it’s advisable to have at least two complementary sizes. With at least 1 m² between your two wings. Here are some ideal combinations:
2.5 m² / 4 m² (2.5 m² / 4 m²)
3 m² / 5 m²
4 m² / 6 m²
Whether you’re a beginner or an expert, there’s an AFS for you!
Which wing board to choose?
Here are the essential criteria:
The lengthThe longer the board, the more it glides and picks up speed on the water before taking off. That’s why we recommend a longer board for beginners, to get the most out of your flight. Choose a board at least 5’5 long for beginners. On the other hand, a shorter board enables tighter turns, more technical handling and better reactivity. Very small boards are ideal for experienced riders.
The outlineThe outline is the external shape of the board. A rectangular outline with wide ends offers greater stability for the rider and faster take-off. Like the AFS Fly One. A shapely board with an ovoid outline and thinner tips, on the other hand, is designed for more advanced riders. For greater responsiveness and control, and therefore more technique.
The widthBoard width determines stability, lift and maneuverability. The wider the board, the more stable it is. In our range, the AFS Fly is an example of a wide board that offers excellent stability.
The volumeFor beginners, it’s important to choose a board with a volume greater than its weight, ideally +30 liters. Experienced riders, on the other hand, opt for a board with a volume equal to or even less than their weight. This requires greater physical effort for take-off and faster maneuvers.
Construction technology
– Rigid boards: these are often of sandwich construction and therefore a little bulkier. However, they offer better glide and feel, perfect for rapid progress. A thicker pad can also offer greater comfort for beginners who spend a lot of time on their knees.
– Inflatable boards: they’re easier to transport, and are still fun to learn on. But less stable and too light in stronger winds.
AFS boards for every level and practice
Fly One: The most affordable board in our range, available in two sizes (100L and 115L). Ideal for safe wing foil beginners.
Fly : Smaller than the Fly One, available in four sizes (65, 75, 90 and 103L). Perfect for freeride and first wing-foil freeflys, with reduced volume for riders who have already made their first runs.
Fire V2: 100% wing foil board, versatile for all types of riding (freeride, freestyle, waves…). With its hollowed deck and bulbous nose, it’s a more technical board, but accessible once you start to feel completely at ease in the air. Three sizes are available: 80, 90 and 100L.
Fire pro: this ultra-compact board is designed for expert riders, whatever their program. Three sizes are available: 56, 70 and 100L.
Whitebird mid length: Multi-purpose board for wing foil freeride, SUP foil, downwind…), it is long for easy take-off even in light winds.
Whitebird DW: Board designed exclusively for downwind wingfoil and SUP foil enthusiasts. Available in 7’8 (130L) or 8’2 (145L) lengths.
Blackbird mid length: A carbon model made in France with a cross-type shape, this AFS board is available in sizes 5’6 (75L), 6’0 (90L) and 6’3 (100L). Stand-up paddle foil, downwind and wing foil freeride are all possible! And even surf foil for the smallest model. If you’re looking for an all-round board, this hybrid satisfies all your needs.
There’s an AFS board for every style and level of practice!

To help you choose the right size, don’t hesitate to consult our product sheets directly, which will indicate the right surface for your size.
What does HR, HM, UHM mean?
A carbon fiber is characterized by its Young’s modulus, which in simple terms corresponds to its resistance to deformation (rigidity). The higher the Young’s modulus, the stiffer the fiber, but also the more expensive. Today, carbon fibers can be classified in terms of stiffness in the following order:
HR (High Resilient) carbon
HM (High Modulus) carbon
UHM (Ultra High Modulus) carbon
A mast is also characterized by its thickness and width (the chord). This is why, for the same thickness, height and width, a HR carbon mast will be less rigid than a UHM carbon mast. At the same time, reducing a mast’s thickness and rope will bring more glide. A high-performance mast goes to these extremes. If we don’t modify the fibers, we lose stiffness. So we work with HM and UHM carbon fibers. However, HR Carbon, HM Carbon and UHM Carbon masts all have good stiffness. However, they have different ropes and thicknesses.
Is it necessary to use footstraps if I’m just starting out in wingfoil?
Strapless: freedom
Strapless practice embodies total freedom, offering incomparable ease of movement. Without footstraps, the deck remains uncluttered, facilitating movement and transitions. This is an excellent option for beginners, who can naturally refine their position on the board.
With straps for optimum control
The advantage of foot straps is that once you’ve mastered the board, they can be optimally positioned to ensure perfect placement for every session. They also offer better control for pumping and allow you to explore jumps with confidence. Last but not least, they’re a good option when the water is choppy: wedging your front foot is a better assurance of balance. Whether it’s for standing up on the board, or for gaining speed more easily before take-off.
